Francisco “Chaleco” Lopez won the the first stage of the 2012 Dakar, but since then it’s been all about Marc Coma and Cyril Despres jostling for top position daily, until yesterday.

Despite smashing his leg off a rock at 120 kph at the start of a 234-mile timed special, Joan Barreda Bort managed to take first place for Speedbrain Husqvarna in yesterday’s running. Coma finished second, cutting Despres’ overall lead to a mere 21 seconds.

The rally leaves Chile this morning, heading to Peru for the first time in its history. The 438-mile day includes a 331-mile timed special.
