Max Biaggi’s been having a tough season. Last year’s World Superbike champ was within catching distance of leader Carlos Checa; now his foot injury is keeping him from regaining some of that lead this weekend.

The World Superbike standings are tight this year; Biaggi is only 21 points behind second-place Marco Melandri, and 96 points behind frontrunner Checa.

He could theoretically have made up those points in the coming races, but with this injury, that now appears unlikely, since Checa only needs 26 points to clinch his title, and Biaggi’s watching from the sidelines.

Biaggi had hoped to be healed up for this weekend’s race, but his broken left foot leaves him unable to shift gears properly on his motorcycle.
