Battery bike hits 200mph

If their new land speed record holds up, Lightning Motorcycles will be the company to beat at Bonneville.

An electric bike builder claims to have reached 200 mph at the Bonneville salt flats.

According to Asphalt and Rubber, Richard Hatfield of Lightning Motorcycles says his machine reached 205 mph on the salt flats on Saturday. Paul Thede, who holds multiple land speed records, piloted the ‘Flying Banana Mk. II’ for the high speed run as part of the Southern California Timing Associations’ Speed Week.

If Lightning Motorcycles’ record stands up to verification, they will have shattered the previous electric bike speed mark of 176.434mph set by Riches Nelson – and he hit 176 mph, and that was on a fully airstreamed bike, the Airtech Lightning Bolt. Impressive!

Nelson figures his team can push the Flying Banana even faster, to 210 mph.
