Silent but deadly

Brammo’s big win at Infineon Raceway’s zero-emissions TTXGP motorcycle race is old news – but here’s a cool new video of their bike’s record-setting performance at the track.

While Brammo’s Empulse RR electric racebike doesn’t have the six-speed gearbox the company recently made headlines with, rider Steve Atlas still handily won both races in the TTXGP’s inaugural round at the Sonoma, California track – and set a new record for highest average lap speed for an electric bike at the track.

Of course, it’s not as if there have been many bikes to challenge that title. But, it’s progress – electric bikes are getting faster and faster, and their batteries are lasting longer and longer. Zero-emissions races like the TTXGP series will only serve to advance motorcycle technology the same way that gasoline-powered races have done already for over a century.

Here’s the video of Atlas aboard the Empulse RR. It’s eerily quiet, compared to your average raucous motorcycle race. Maybe if town councillors across Canada have their way, we’ll all be riding bikes like this in the future.

  1. without engine noise (“sound” if some prefer) it seems as if it’s not as fast.
I guess we get accustom to relating speed and power to engine noise by what our hearing interprets and strange to only hear the wind noise. I’m very impressed with e-bikes never-the-less, and it sounds similar to a skydiver in freefall.

  2. Well…

Not having a lot of track time at Infinion, well, none at Infinion… Ok… None anywhere…
But in my highly qualified, armchair quarterback view, he coulda done better…

A couple of them corners were a wee bit wider than they coulda been…

    I’m thinking high 1:14s easy…. (Add a min or so for my laptimes… 😉 )
