Yesterday, we told you about Paul Bird Motorsport’s implication in a cross-border drug bust, but at the time we had no official statement from Bird himself.

Well, a little later on in the day, the head of Kawasaki’s Superbike race team said his piece, and unsurprisingly, he denied his team had any involvement in the smuggling. No kidding – if border guards found a handgun and a pile of drugs in our vehicle, we’d probably deny responsibility too.

Bird’s statement confirmed the drug discovery in his team’s vehicle, but as he put it: “The discovery came as a shock to the whole team, including those who were present during the search. The team are confident that no team member has any connection whatsoever with the items discovered. No one has been detained after the time of the search and all team members are able to undertake their normal duties.”

If his team is squeaky clean, we’re left wondering – where did the drugs come from? We’re sure to hear more about this one in the weeks ahead.
