If your schedule is free on July 10, we’ve got a suggestion: Head down to Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto and help boost GlobalMedic during their second annual Support Ride.
Wait a minute, you say – GlobalMedic? I’ve never heard of them! Well, here’s the skinny: GlobalMedic is an NGO charity supplying relief supplies and equipment around the world. They’re the operational arm of the David McAntony Gibson Foundation, which has been around since 1998, and their goal is to deliver the maximum amount of aid at minimal cost.
And apparently, instead of setting up tables at your local retailers and mooching your change as you leave, they’ve got a far more awesome idea of how to raise funds – they’ve set up a motorcycle poker run. Registration for the event begins at 8:30 a.m., opening ceremonies are at 9:40, and the ride itself starts at 10 a.m. from the racetrack. Be sure to grab a poker hand at every stop, and remember: this ride isn’t a race.
Beside the motorcycling, there’ also be other charity standbys like raffles, silent auctions, and food. At the end of the day, organizers will show off an inflatable field hospital as well as water purification units that are used in disaster relief deployments.
Of course, there are prizes as well; first prize is a 52-inch foldable Stinger motorcycle trailer. That just might come in handy at the end of the event if you’re too tired to ride home after a day in the saddle.
