It’s on … It’s off … and it’s on again. We think.

The Catalina Grand Prix, a classic off-road road motorcycle race once attended by the likes of Steve McQueen and Bud Ekin, ran in 2010, 52 years after it was first cancelled. Vintage and modern race enthusiasts alike flocked to Catalina Island off the California coast and declared the race a success, but news came out last week that the race had been cancelled for 2011.

Well, the race is still off for 2011, but Hell For Leather is reporting the race is supposed to go ahead in 2012. Their source, supposedly a member of the island’s town council, gave them the hot tip.

We don’t know the reasons for the cancellation, whether Red Bull will stay on as a sponsor, or if the course route is going to see significant changes, but if you want to run the historic dirt race, you’ve now got an extra year to prep your bike. Get busy.
