Patrick Trahan’s dream of circumnavigating Africa to raise funds for charity has come to a premature end.

Former Dakar competitor Trahan embarked on his journey on March 26th, with plans to circumnavigate the African continent on a modified Honda XR650L. His ride came to an unexpected end in Nigeria on April 24th, when he collided with a pickup truck coming in the opposite direction.

According to a post on his blog, he hit the pickup head on at 120 km/h. The impact was violent enough to knock one of his riding boots off.

Trahan suffered 12 fractures including his elbow, arm and left femur. Yesterday he reported he was in hospital in Nigeria awaiting an emergency airlift to Johannesburg to receive surgery to his badly broken leg.

We wish Patrick a speedy recovery and a safe return. You can still donate to his cause through his website.
