An electric scooter from VW?

Volkswagen is showing off an electric scooter concept bike at the Shanghai Motor Show.

While the German automotive giant is known for long-running diesel cars, not motorcycles — except for the VW-powered Amazonas touring bikes from Brazil — car mag Auto Express says the move comes as a power play to fend off similar two-wheeled efforts from Smart and MINI.

Perhaps the strangest thing about the lithium ion battery-powered machine, named the e-Scooter, is that it’s not intended for personal ownership; Auto Express says VW intends the machine to be rented out from solar-powered charging stations and used for inter-city transportation. The rental system will be run by Volkswagen Finance.

The e-Scooter is a far cry from Brazil’s 1600cc VW-powered Amazonas motorcycle.

This isn’t VW’s only foray into electric vehicles; the company is also tinkering with a folding electric bicycle project, intended for urban use.
