Suzuki’s Burgman Fuel-Cell scooter is the world’s first vehicle to earn Whole Vehicle Type approval in the European Union. This means that Suzuki can go ahead and sell the hydrogen-powered scooter in each of the EU member states.
First shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2009, the Burgman Fuel-Cell scooter has been tested on the road since February 2010 by the British firm Intelligent Energy, who developed the scooter’s fuel cell.
The Burgman Fuel-Cell scooter uses an air-cooled fuel cell, fed by a hydrogen tank located within the frame. The resulting electricity powers an electric motor that propels the machine; the only byproduct is water.
According to the official press release, “Suzuki is working toward commercializing the Burgman Fuel-Cell Scooter as a motorcycle with superior environmental performance.” However, no time frame is given as to when it will reach market.
