Unlike Zero’s belt-driven S and DS models, the XU gets chain drive

The 2011 Zero XU is an all-new urban runabout with an all-new feature: an easily removable power pack.

The lithium ion power pack is designed to be easily removable so it can be charged anywhere there is an outlet using Zero’s optional stand-alone charger, which is part of the new quick-charge option.

Customers who buy an additional power pack can interchange it for quick recovery from a drained battery. The battery pack is interchangeable in 2011 Zero X and MX models.

The Zero XU features an 810 mm (31.8 in) seat height and an optional low seat drops that to 760 mm (29.8 in) is available. The machine rolls on a 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheel and boasts a cruising range of 48 km, with a top speed of 82 km/h. A low-speed version is also available with a maximum speed of 70 km/h.

Retail price is $7,995, more info available here.

  1. Cool idea, but a range of 48km? I guess if it was to just go to and from work, and you lived within 15kms of work…I don’t know, the price is a little steep for my wallet…when you can get a 50cc scooter that consumes 2-2.5L/100kms for under $3000…it’s a hard sell.

I just don’t think the tech is there yet to make this feasable for the masses…I live 27kms from work and have to travel hiway to get there, speed limit is 110kph…but I don’t ride a scooter to work either… 😉

They also need to come up with an “electric sound” for the bikes and cars that are coming out…pedestrians just don’t watch for a silent vehicle…someone is going to get hurt badly…

    Later.
