Victory heads east

Victory takes a gamble on the Indian market.

India’s Business Standard recently reported that the upstart cruiser company is hoping to bring its bikes to the country’s booming motorcycle market as soon as 2012.

The report says Victory is deciding which models would be best suited for the country before introducing them at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi. Then, they’ll likely follow Harley-Davidson’s footsteps and establish a factory in India to get around punishing import taxes, which can double the cost of a bike for the country’s buyers.

It won’t be a walk in the park for Victory, though — the world has taken notice of India’s motorcycle buying spree, and marques like BMW and Triumph are also lined up, waiting to join recent entries Ducati, Aprilia, and Hyosung.

Indian motorcycling giant Royal Enfield has seen the increased competition and started work on new machines to beef up their lineup as well. It remains to be seen, though, how well the bigger, more expensive bikes will sell in a country where affordable 125-200cc machines are the norm.
