The GS is still the best seller for BMW.

BMW continues to gain market share in the motorcycling world, both in Canada and internationally.

According to BMW, their Canadian motorcycle sales grew five per cent in 2010 with 1,925 machines sold, while the country’s industry as a whole took an 11 per cent drop.

Around the world, numbers were even better; BMW saw a 12.3 per cent increase in sales internationally, set against the backdrop of doom and gloom from the economic recession, and even outsold the competition in 11 markets.

The company’s GS series of adventure bikes account for over 40 per cent of sales and remain their most popular machines, with the R 1200 GS selling 18,768 units internationally, up from 15,864 bikes, and the R 1200 GS Adventure selling 11,648 units, an increase from 8,803. The R 1200 RT touring bike was the marque’s third best-seller, with 11,132 vehicles sold.

Subsidiary Husqvarna didn’t fare so well, with a 7.6 per cent drop in international sales, from 13,052 bikes to 12,066.

Germany remains BMW’s biggest sales stronghold, followed by Italy, the US, France, Spain, and the UK.
