Harley-Davidson’s worldwide motorcycle
sales were down, but income was up in the second quarter of 2010.
Sales of new motorcycles dropped 5.5
percent worldwide and 8.4 percent in the U.S. for the three months of
April through June compared to the same three months in 2009.
But income for the same period of 2010
was considerably higher than last year’s second quarter income, up to
$139.3 million from just $33.4 million.
That number includes $60.8 million of
income from financial services.
Total revenue from motorcycles and
other products was $1.14 billion in the second quarter.
The company shipped 112,720 motorcycles
in the first half of 2010, down from 132,849 in the same period last
year.
Harley has undergone some
"restructuring" recently, and has cut its workforce in the York,
Pennsylvania, plant while attempting to get rid of workers at
Wisconsin plants. Harley has said it will close production plants in
Tomahawk and Milwaukee if unions don’t make concessions.
Harley plans to ship between 201,000
and 212,000 motorcycles in 2010, which would be from five to 10
percent below last year’s shipments.
Apparently, they are getting some younger customers in the US, so I guess they are changing and they perhaps know it will not happen overnight …

Wasn’t that – getting a younger different demograhic – the point behind the Buell & MV strategy. How did that go?
Why would HD estimate that in improving economic condition they would sell [b]less[/b] motorcycles than last year?
I don’t expect them to agree with the critics saying for years, that they need to revamp their lineup to reflect the demographics of their future customers ….
