Brett McCormick staked his road racing
future on spending his own money to take the Picotte Performance team
to Daytona with him. These are the same guys he worked with under
Blackfoot sponsorship in Canada in 2009 to take close seconds behind
Jordan Szoke in both superbike and 600 classes.
Trouble was, that’s all the money there
was, and the Saskatoon teen hoped to show well and get some
sponsorship money. He ran with the leaders in the 200 and copped an
eighth in one of the superbike races … but no sugar daddy appeared.
Then Celtic Racing’s Barry Gilsenan did a deal with "The Kid"
to ride Celtic’s GSX-R1000 at the second AMA superbike round in
California, because regular rider P.J. Jacobsen had injured a hand in
the Daytona 200 first-lap crash.
A 12th and a seventh
impressed everyone again, and once again another rider’s injury
worked in McCormick’s favour. Jordan Suzuki’s Aaron Yates suffered
multiple fractures to his right leg in a morning practice crash, and
Jordan promptly offered McCormick a try-out on Yates’ bike. In his
first session McCormick was within a second of Jake Zemke, the other
Jordan rider who’s currently leading the AMA series.
Word this weekend is that McCormick has
been offered Yates’ ride until he’s healed up enough to get back in
the saddle. It’s an amazing opportunity; Michael Jordan’s team is
matched in equipment, expertise, and money only by the Yoshimura
team.
McCormick couldn’t have asked for a
better place to showcase his talents on the U.S. stage. We’ll be
watching April 16-18 as he tackles Road Atlanta.
yeah fantastic
GO FOR IT Brett
It’s great to have a Canadian rider to root for again … and a potentially GREAT one.
