The first Ninja

Kawasaki is celebrating the 25th anniversary of a bike that claims status as one of the first modern sport bikes.

The Kawasaki Ninja GPz900R was nearly revolutionary when it hit the showrooms in 1984, just after the Honda Interceptor and Suzuki Katana, and simultaneously with Yamaha’s FJ1100.

With its angular fairing, powerful motor, and quick handling, the first Ninja was snapped up by riders eager for a motorcycle that was all about performance, and Kawasaki capitalized on that market trend, following up with a long range of Ninjas.

The president of Kawasaki Heavy Industries has sent a letter to dealers stating that he feels it is his mission "to further strengthen the Ninja brand and to introduce more models that exude a unique Kawasaki character."
