U.S. dealers have been given a two-year stay of execution on sales of small bikes and ATVs that contain lead.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced that a vote last Friday resulted in a two-year exemption for motorcycles, ATVs, and snowmobiles from the ban on sales of items that contain lead and are intended for use by children.
Some dealers have already got around this by designating these banned machines as for use by kids older than 12 or by altering the machines to make them legal.
The ban was a provision of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which went into effect in February. Canadians weren’t directly affected, though some dealers may have been able to acquire cheaper motorcycles from U.S. dealers who panicked.
