Following an ugly crash at the Costa Rica X Knights games, freestyle star Jeremy Lusk has died at age 24.

Lusk hit the ground before his motorcycle had fully rotated out of a back flip. He was rushed to a hospital in San Jose, Costa Rica.

He suffered a severe brain trauma and died at 11:03 p.m. PST on Tuesday night, with his wife and other family members at his bedside.

On the freestyle circuit, Lusk was a sensation. He had won gold for Moto X Best Trick at the 2008 X Games Mexico, gold for Moto X Freestyle at the 2008 X Games, and silver for Moto X Best Trick at the 2008 X Games, as well as a number of other top five finishes in 2007 and 2008, including a bronze at the Moto X World Championships in Moto X Freestyle in 2008.

A funeral will be held in California on Monday, and a trust fund has been set up in his name. See athleterecoveryfund.com for more.

YouTube video shows the crash sequence, but is not pleasant to watch.
