Motorcycles equipped with antilock brake systems are saving lives, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a U.S. agency.

The Institute said today that ABS on motorcycles reduces fatal crash rates by 38 per cent.

IIHS researchers compared fatal-crash rates among motorcycles with ABS optionally available.

With those models where ABS had been installed, there were 4.1 fatal crashes for every 10,000 such bikes on the road. Among the same models without the ABS, the fatality rate was 6.6 per 10,000.

The IIHS researchers also found that antilock brakes apparently reduced collision claims. There was a 20 per cent drop in insurance payments for bikes equipped with ABS.

Studies looked at 2003 – 2007 Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Triumph motorcycles.

Works for me… ABS on my Bandit, has already saved me… It was my fault, but it made up for my error in judgement.
