Prince William enjoys Daytona

Princes William and Harry wanted to be just like Ewan and Charley — or maybe like those Dakar rallyists — but the dangers of Africa spoilt their plans.

Britain’s princely lads had allegedly expressed interest in a thousand-mile motorcycle ride through Africa, but the idea was nixed by security officers. "Harry has been told that their protection officers would be unable to guarantee their safety," someone from the castle told the British paper The Telegraph. "They said they simply cannot allow them to put themselves at such a risk of kidnap or ambush."

The royal riders had been been excited by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s film The Long Way Down. The ride would have benefitted orphans in Lesotho through a charity, Sentebale.

Told of the royals’ change of plans, Boorman told MCN that they should have done it anyway. "It’s a shame for them, because they’re big into their bikes," he said.
