Less than a month after attending his hero’s funeral in Montana, an Australian freestyle motocrosser has set a world record that might have impressed Evel Knievel.

Robbie Maddison made two jumps on New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas, 98.15 metres and 97.54 metres on a Honda CR, breaking a record of 84.43 m set by an American in Australia two years earlier.

Maddison said the wind was against him, but he landed both jumps in good shape. The performance was broadcast on ESPN as part of the network’s New Year’s Eve show.

The 26-year-old Australian had wanted to jump the length of an American football field, 91.44 metres, and dedicated his New Year’s Eve splash to the recently-deceased American daredevil.
