If you squint and step back 20 feet from the screen, you can’t even tell it’s a diesel
A motorcycle that runs on biodiesel fuel is competing in the 2007 Panasonic World Solar Challenge in Australia and returning a fuel economy of about 2.2 litres per 100 km while running at nearly 100 km/h.
The BioBike is Australia’s first biodiesel motorcycle and was created by a group of mechanical engineering students from Adelaide to prove that the fuel made from vegetable oils and animal fats can power a functional motorcycle. The 130 kg bike uses a Yanmar 400 cc diesel generator pumping 10 hp through a CVT and mounted in a modified Husaberg frame.
The Panasonic Challenge is a 3,000 km race from Darwin to Adelaide which started on the 21st October and wraps up on the 28th. More info at www.wsc.org.au.
