The only rider who could stay with Stoner was 2006 world champion Nicky Hayden on his factory Repsol Honda, but just before half-distance his engine started to tighten up, then a huge puff of smoke signaled an unusual engine failure (a dropped valve was diagnosed) and he coasted to a frustrated and furious halt. Reportedly back in the garage he was more angry than anyone has seen him since his team-mate Pedrosa knocked him off in Portugal last year.

Third went to Valentino Rossi on the factory Fiat Yamaha, Rossi claiming he was having tire problems (rumours are that he has arranged to switch to Bridgestone for 2008 despite the fact that Yamaha has publicly announced they’ll continue with Michelin), while fourth went to Dani Pedrosa on the other Repsol Honda.
