The S40, once known as the Savage, is a bit of an oddball— an air-cooled, 650 cc single-cylinder cruiser. It has, however, been around since 1986, and perseverance pays, because it is now popular with custom builders, thanks in part to the resurgence of the cafe racer, and conversion kits from Ryca that make it easy to build one. Its light weight, low seat height and civilized power delivery mean it's a great beginner bike, and its simple design means there's very little to go wrong.
