RIP, Steve Bond, 1950-2019

Longtime CMG contributor Steve Bond died yesterday after a short fight against cancer. Bondo leaves his partner Cherie and daughters Jamie and Heather, seen above.

DAD. Husband. Grandfather. Friend. Journalist. Outdoorsman. Motorcyclist. Hero.

After a short but incredibly brave and courageous battle, Dad peacefully passed away last night with his greatest love and 2 daughters by his side.

We would like to thank everyone who has reached out over the past 5 months with words of love, support and encouragement. It is wonderful to know how many beautiful people he had in his life.

Rest easy Daddy, we hope you know how much we love you, and how incredibly proud of you we are.

Bondo was diagnosed with lymphoma this summer and had been receiving chemotherapy. Last month, he wrote:

“Bit of a setback; while I was busy punching Lymphoma’s face off, this sneaky bastard goes behind my back and gives me double pneumonia 3 days before my next chemo. So here I am, in ICU at Abbotsford Hospital, and my fourth round of chemo has been delayed at least a week. It’s still touch-and-go for a while, and if I ever needed all those good thoughts from FB world, now is the time”

    He really enjoyed some dual sport rides with our clan 2 day to Picton ride and numerous Sunday rides and was nice enough to let us try some test bikes on occasion

  4. I’ve known Steve a long time. When I retired and was available during the day, he asked me if I’d be willing to ‘help’ him on many an occasion while he performed test rides on new motorcycles. At the time, I was still a fledgling rider. That didn’t bother Steve. What a pleasure and honour it was to both ride with him and get to know him better. I will miss him as a mentor and a friend. My condolences to Cherie, Jamie and Heather.

  5. I really enjoyed his article “Don’t go West, young man”. He was witty. Sorry to hear he has passed. Whoever knew him personally were lucky!

  6. So sorry to hear this. I feel like I knew Steve, he had been part of the CMG family for so long. Had many a conversation on the Soapbox.
    Condolences to his friends and colleagues at CMG, and his friends and family in general.

  7. I didn’t know him well, but he was part of the Canadian motorcycle journalist fraternity and always a pleasure to be around. He was a helluva rider and a sweet guy and I’m sorry to lose another of our small party. RIP Steve

  9. Ah, man. Bruce Reeve and now Steve Bond gone in short order. Two great guys and great journalists. Motorcycling’s annus horribilis.

  10. Terrible news. Steve, Larry, Costa etc. have always been Cdn motorcycling royalty to me, now we’re one short. Was an honour getting passed by you Bondo.

  11. So sad to hear of Bondo’s passing. As already mentioned, he was part of the appeal of that ‘simple’ forum, but also contributed a great deal to the Canadian motorcycling community. He will be missed.

  12. Bondo moved west a few years ago and, among many other trips into the BC Interior and south into Washington and Oregon, we did a trip to Laguna for the World Superbike races in 2018. I always enjoyed riding at a “spirited pace” with someone who knew what they were doing. A sneaky and dry sense of humour and a love of the Leafs (and hatred of the Habs) always gave us something to talk about. Steve will be missed.

  15. Sorry to hear it. Bondo was always a major part of the Soapbox back in the day, and his musings were a big part of why it was so interesting. Of course he wrote and did so much more, but he definitely had an impact on a lot of people via a simple forum. Rest in peace.
