Isle of Man TT cancels Zero TT for next two years

The Isle of Man TT is canceling its all-electric race for the next two years.

The Zero TT has run at the Isle of Man since 2010, running as a single-lap race aboard battery bikes.  MotoCzysz dominated the competition in its early years, but nobody’s beaten the Mugen team since 2014, despite strong efforts from Victory and the University of Nottingham.

Opinions on the TT Zero have tended to be very polarized, with some fans seeing it as the only future for the IOMTT, and others disliking it for its slow speeds and single-lap format. The race’s biggest problem hasn’t been fan apathy, though, it’s been a lack of entries. And that’s why the 2020 and 2021 races are canceled, organizers say. They say they want the industry to catch up.

Given the new electric racing series in MotoGP, maybe that will indeed happen. And maybe not. Battery bikes have been at the forefront of the industry for the past 12 months, but so far, that buzz hasn’t been accompanied by talk of racing.
