Paris adds noise camera system to fight loud pipes

Paris (the French one, not the Ontario one) has followed the lead of Edmonton , and is installing noise cameras (sort of) to fight vehicle noise.

Brit mag Visordown reports Paris is installing the cameras to penalize vehicles making noise late at night or early in the morning. Unlike the system that was tested in Edmonton, and has been also examined for use in the UK, the French system doesn’t integrate a microphone into a camera. Instead, it uses a microphone array to pinpoint the source of noise, then uses already-existing video surveillance networks to grab licence plate numbers.

From there, Big Brother will email out traffic tickets to the owners of the vehicles.

The effectiveness of the program remains to be seen. The sound camera system was a failure the first time it was tested in Edmonton, although the city went ahead and implemented it again this year.
