Cake Kalk& battery bike: Street-legal, and expensive

Swedish e-bike manufacturer Cake has introduced a new model, called the Kalk&.

Leaving questions of grammar and spelling aside, what do you get with the Kalk&? It’s supposed to be a bridge between a full electric motorcycle and an e-bike. It has blinkers and headlight, it’s considered to be a street-legal motorcycle more-or-less, but it’s not in the same class as a Harley-Davidson LiveWire.

Instead, what you get is a spindly-looking machine that’s mostly just a battery and a frame. The battery is a small 2.6 kWh unit, with supposedly 86 km of range (no word on how fast the average speed is, to travel that far). Recharge time is 2.5 hours from a standard wall plug.

The Kalk& has a 10 kW motor with 21 kW controller. A choice of three different ride modes helps you optimize performance or riding range.

The Kalk& only weighs 79 kg, far less than its more capable full-sized electric  motorcycle counterparts.

Now, here’s the zinger: the Kalk& is set to sell around the $14,000 US mark. A lot less than a LiveWire, sure, but for a machine that’s basically restricted to the range of a bicycle? That’s a lot of dough.

  1. If you want to see something really interesting check out the Sur Ron. $6000 Cdn and really a dirt bike but something very special. A hot rodded version will smoke a Husky 450 in a drag race.
