Along with high-horsepower adventure bikes, supermotos and dual sports, KTM has also been busy working on this project: an electric minibike for kids.
The KTM SX-E5 is powered by a lithium-ion battery, hooked up to a 5 kW motor. While we’re not sure on battery capacity, KTM says a beginning rider can get as much as two hours’ use out of the bike. A more advanced rider (read: a bigger kid with a need for speed) can get as little as 25 minutes. Recharge time is one hour.
Other, more clever details: the seat is adjustable so the bike fits riders as they get older (or, if they have that thing from the Benjamin Button movie, where they get younger). The seat can range from 653 mm to 698 mm, with a suspension lowering kit as well, which can drop the seat all the way to 556 mm.
As well, the instrument panel allows users to select between six different ride modes, which is a handy way for Mom and Dad to keep Lil’ Jimmy or Lil’ Jenny riding within their limits. And if that does happen, there is a kill switch attached to a wrist lanyard so if the rider falls off, the bike stops running.
All in all, it’s not a high-horsepower screamer that will put hair on your chest, but this should be a very easy-to-maintain bike, which will suit many parents just fine.
The KTM SX-E 5 is expected in North America in fall of 2019, but we don’t know MSRP yet.
