KTM 790 Adventure, 790 Adventure R unveiled

The much-anticipated KTM 790 Adventure and 790 Adventure R have been officially revealed at EICMA.

Anticipation has been high for these models for some time now, as KTM teased them with a global campaign. Here’s the skinny: these bikes are powered by KTM’s new liquid-cooled parallel twin, but it’s tuned a bit differently than the version found in the 790 Duke. So, you’ve got about 94 hp and 63 pound-feet of torque.

Both bikes also have three engine modes to handle power delivery; an offroad mode allows for a little more hoonery in the dirt and smooths out the throttle response. A rally mode (optional on the standard model) allows riders to choose the intervention level of the system, from a full-on rain mode to no interference at all. There’s a traction control system as well. A quickshifter is optional.

As far as suspension, it’s sourced in-house from WP. The standard 790 Adventure has non-adjustable WP Apex forks up front. The rear WP monoshock is adjustable only for preload. Suspension travel is 200 mm.

What about brakes? Up front, there are dual 320 mm discs, with four-piston calipers. ABS is standard, offroad ABS is optional. There’s a 260 mm disc in back.

There’s a 20-litre fuel tank, good for 450 km of range, KTM claims. The base model has a two-piece seat, which KTM sits low, along with the fuel, to enhance maneuverability. Seat height can be adjusted from 830 mm to 851 mm. Of course, the front wheel is a 21-inch unit, and the rear is an 18-incher.

Other tweaks to make the bike better offroad include serrated footpegs with removable rubber inserts. The tapered aluminum handlebar can be adjusted for comfort, and the base model has a tall windscreen.

There’s a 5-inch TFT screen on both machines, with all the readouts you’d get with a typical set of gauges—odometer, tripmeter, fuel range, etc.; it automatically adjusts to ambient light conditions. Both machines also have LED headlights and taillights. Handguards are standard on both models. Heated grips and heated seats are optional.

Dry weight is 189 kg.

The 790 Adventure R is the same basic package, but with some key differences, particularly upgraded suspension. There are 48 mm WP XPLOR USD shocks up front, and the WP rear shock uses a progressive damping system. Suspension travel is 240 mm.

For offroad safety, the R has a shortened windshield, and Metzeler Karoo tires for more grip in the dirt. It also has a different seat, with 879 mm seat height.

We haven’t seen Canadian pricing or availability for these machines yet.

  1. A lot to like here, both versions already on KTM Canada site so I assume will be available here.

This is turning out to be a great year for motorcycles, at least outside Japan….
