You probably can’t buy the Yamaha YZF-R1 GYTR

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the R1 (that makes us feel reallllll old), Yamaha has announced the special-edition YZF-R1 GYTR. How special is it? So special that you probably won’t ever see one in real life, let alone buy one, as only 20 of these bikes will be made.

And, the machines are track-only, with lots of race parts, stripped down of all those pesky bits that make a machine street-legal. Instead, you get Ohlins suspension—FGRT 219 front forks and as is pretty standard on top-line superbikes, a TTX36 GP rear shock.

Other high-level components include titanium Akrapovic exhaust, engine and crankcase armour from Gilles Tooling, carbon-fibre fairings, steering damper, Brembo brakes, Bridgestone tires—you get the picture.

Most importantly of all, Yamaha is also willing to teach you how to take advantage of all that equipment. Buy the bike, and you also get a trip to the Yamaha Racing Experience training program, where the company’s riding coaches will teach you how to give the bike a proper flogging on-track.
