Along with the usual racing action, there’s lots of other activity at next weekend’s final double-header installation in the Canadian Superbike season.
It’s a big year for Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. It’s the 40th anniversary of the first superbike race there, and word on the street is that John Long, the American racer who won the first superbike race there in 1978, will be at the track with the same BMW R90S that took that win, but we haven’t seen official confirmation.
This is the first edition of the Doubleheader Challenge running out of CTMP. It’s a two-day adventure bike rip through the Kawartha region, organized by the same people behind the Fundy Adventure Rally. Cleverly, they’ve put together a route that lets you ride the trails in the morning and take in the superbike racing in the afternoon. Sounds like a good time! As well, the Toronto Motorcycle Film Festival is screening movies on the night of August 11, starting at 8:30 PM. The TMFF will be showing Dream Racer, The Little Person Inside and AKA Brokentooth. This event is free, as long as you’ve paid admission to the track.
For fans of two-wheeled hoonery, the Jordan Szoke Extreme Show is also doing performances on Saturday (10:30 AM, 12 PM, 5 PM and 7 PM) ) and Sunday (10:30 AM 12 PM and 2 PM). No word on whether the superbike champ himself will be nailing jumps in this freestyle MX show; he likely has more pressing concerns next weekend, as he tries to finish another season unbeaten. Again, entry is fee if you’ve paid admission to the track.
There are demo rides at CTMP again this year, with registration for the Honda, BMW and Harley-Davidson fleets in Lower Paddock F. Honda is also running the Junior Red Riders program, safely teaching kids 6-12 the basics of motorcycling.
And lastly, if your selfie game is on, you can also enter CTMP’s selfie contest. As per the marketeers: “post a photo on Instagram taken at our CTMP photo spot, tag @ctmpoffical and use #CTMPLife to enter. Every entry can pick up a free event poster at the merchandise trailer. The winner will be upgraded to Grand Prix Club on the Sunday.“
I hope to see the CMG entry on Thursday or Friday. It depends on how long it will take me to ride the 1600km route, and if they will let me in the park that early for camping. 😉
