In 1982, Elspeth Beard set off from the UK aboard a 1974 BMW R60/6, embarking on a 56,000-km journey around the world by herself, the first British woman to do so. Now, Octane Publishing has picked up the rights to her book, making it easy for us Canadians to read about her adventures.
Beard’s book is titled Lone Rider, and is a ripping tale of adventure riding in an era without onboard GPS, smartphones, or any of the other technological luxuries that we rely on today. The Cold War was still on, and as she says in the video above, she rode through some hot war zones as well. Sounds like a cracking tale, and well worth reading.
The book was originally published in the UK late last year, but now Octane is publishing it here in North America, so you should be able to order a copy through your local bookstore or online now. Give it to your motorcycle-riding mama for Mother’s Day next month, or for dad on Father’s Day—it’s a story everyone should enjoy. Or just buy one for yourself.
