Canadian Superbike champion Jordan Szoke has lost his lead in the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy.
Szoke clinched the CSBK Pro Superbike title weeks back, earning his 12th career championship in the season-closing double-header at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. But Szoke wasn’t just competing against other CSBK racers this year; as a BMW-riding privateer, he also entered in the Race Trophy championship, which allows Beemer-mounted racers from around the world to compete against each other, sort of, for the title of top racer.
All summer long, Race Trophy competitors (privateers using BMWs) see their race points from their individual races added up; at the end of the year, the top privateer takes home a fat cheque and a trophy. You can read about the revised rules for the 2017 Race Trophy here.
Szoke almost won in 2015, won in 2016, and was leading the 2017 standings until recently, when  Marcus Reiterberger (from Germany’s IDM series) pulled past in the standings. Currently, Reiterberger has 416.48 points to Szoke’s 400.00. Since the Race Trophy rules don’t allow Szoke to boost his points total with races in the US, he can’t add to his score and pass Reiterberger again.
Reiterberger won in 2014, when Szoke’s missed races cost him the CSBK championship.
Still, a second-place win in the Race Trophy still gives Szoke a cheque for 10,000 Euros, so he’s got a nice consolation prize if he keeps in the runner-up position.
