We talk about lanesplitting a lot here at CMG, and one reply we always get is, “The car-driving public isn’t ready for it.” This video seems to lend that theory some credence.
The description of the video says “The story behind this – A friend of mine sent me his footage from the other day of this man attacking him. He was in traffic and there was a lady behind him texting and driving. He didn’t feel safe so he lane split ahead and the guy in the truck was NOT happy about it!” Otherwise, the footage pretty much speaks for itself (in NSFW language, too!).
If we ever do get lanesplitting or filtering legalized across North America, we might have to go on a massive public awareness media blitz, before a road rage incident goes too far.

I used to be a supporter of filtering, but apparently it has a nasty side effect – its obviously turned this guy into a whiny homophobe. Of course it’s going to piss people off when it’s still illegal.

I always hear that “lanesplitting” is illegal. Yet I’ve never heard of anyone ever getting a ticket for “lanesplitting”.
Makes me wonder if it’s an actual charge or a term we always refer to by default?
The video is quite vague in my opinion. The rider says he ” lanesplit” because he was concerned about a person behind him driving and texting? If so wouldn’t the proper rider action be. To maneuver in between the two cars in front of him and stay there? I don’t understand why he “had to” move all the way through all of the stopped Traffic? As he queues to the front of the line. The light turns green and he pulls through the intersection. Great timing or a planned event? The driver of the truck most likely wasn’t checking his mirrors. Most drivers check their mirrors twice a year whether they need to or not.
I can see him getting surprised as he’s about to move away from a stop and a bike shoots past him.
Then there’s the stop at the lights. It sounded like there was some sort of verbal exchange between him and the Driver before he got out of his truck. All I can say is that if I was stopped at a light minding my own business.
When suddenly a driver of a car jumped out and charged me . I would most likely .
1) ride away and die laughing as I watched an obviously out of shape old man try to keep up
2) if I truly believed that this guy was attacking me. Step off my bike and knock him flat onto the ground.
Let the police figure it out later with the help of my video.
The name calling and pushing is quite comical. Much like a school yard fight between two children.
By the way I hope the car driver isn’t gay. Because the human rights complaint that he’ll file will drag through
one human rights Tribunal to another for years. The biker will probably get into more trouble for that than anything else that he did!!

I’ve never had to deal with an encounter like the one in the video, but I’ve had my share of odd experiences.
I’ve split/filtered on 3 occasions over the course of 12-15 years because of stopped/crawling traffic. In all 3 instances I wasn’t moving faster than 15 kph. Twice on the 401 I was “chased” and shouted at by 2 transport drivers at the lights of the off ramp (once in French) and the final time in was in Oshawa on Bloor where the road is fairly wide where an old guy in a Pontiac was DETERMINED that I wasn’t going to get ahead of HIM to the point of swerving into oncoming to prevent me from passing.
Last week on the QEW I was in the fast lane going 120 and came upon an old Blazer going 110. I flashed my high beams to let him know I was there and to move over (I won’t tailgate). He didn’t move so I moved right to go around him, so he speeds up to prevent it. At 130 I backed off and fell in behind him again, and he immediately drops to 110.
The fact of the matter is there’s too many people with the attitude, “If I’m stuck here why should you be able to get away?”

I find it hard to comprehend that Lane Splitting as you call it is frowned upon. Here in the UK and all of Europe we do it all the time at low speed. We call it filtering and it is perfectly safe and legal if used correctly. The whole point of riding a motorcycle is to be free of sitting in rows of traffic. What is the problem?
problem is everyone is a tough guy until they find out they aren’t and North Americans believe in the cue…. for everything.
I’d seen this video a few times before and to me it looks like some ass-hat did an illegal move, pissed off another driver, became just as confrontational as the other driver and now is trying to justify his position by posting a video that shows no proof of the mysterious texting driver behind him.
I think he’s a finger pointer – likes to blame others any chance he can. Call the Wahhhhhmbulance.
I don’t see how scooting through to the front of the line justifies a driver exiting his vehicle and becoming aggressive. “Wahhhhhmbulance” just does not seem to apply here.

I never had anyone get out of their car but I did witness some pretty aggressive behavior from frustrated drivers, this is not that unusual and one of the main reason I now hesitate to do it.
Low speed line splitting should be legal.
Many years ago, I was chased on a section of highway between Bracebridge and Gravenhurst when a cager decided that he wasn’t pleased with me cruising the shoulder on a 30+ degree Sunday to avoid the stalled traffic one summer day. Fine to say that I shouldn’t have been on the shoulder (correct), but my indiscretion certainly didn’t warrant being chased. Some people have serious anger issues.
