The mad off-road tinkerers of Touratech have put together yet another fascinating custom, dubbed the Rambler.
Based around BMW’s liquid-cooled 1200 boxer, the Rambler is a mish-mash of an R1200 R (frame and motor) and R1200 GS, with front forks off an F800 GS Adventure. Presumably, the point of this weird hybridization was to cut weight, as the project’s goal was to build a water-boxer under 199 kg.
Touratech says they succeeded in this goal, coming in at 198 kg. And, the bike appears to be plenty capable off-road, in the same vein as BMW’s classic HP2 model (which also used standard forks insted of a Telelever front end, to reduce weight).
The whole bike looks very trim, with enduro-style plastics, seat, and tank, and a single-disc front brake. The designers retained the ABS system, but it’s unclear whether it has leaning ABS or the other electronic trickery that’s standard on big-bore adventure bikes these days.
The front and rear wheels are 21 inches and 17 inches respectively, and the tires are Metzeler Karoo 3s. There’s quite a bit of carbon fibre on the bike, and some custom aluminum bits as well (including triple trees). The front forks also have a long-travel suspension kit, delivering 300 mm of travel. The rear has 200 mm of travel.
Two prototypes were built, but the only difference between them is the colour.
Will this project ever make production? Considering the short life span of the original HP2, it’s doubtful. On the other hand, KTM’s 1290 platform is definitely the hot rod of the big bore ADV scene, so maybe this is a weapon BMW could use to fight back?

The HP2 E looks pretty darn nice and I’m glad to hear how it’s performing so far. Our company is looking to get a new fleet for adventure tours here in BC and this would be a perfect bike imho. Anyone suspect a price point for these bikes yet?
