Rumour: MV Agusta’s US, Canadian distributors to change hands

The financial turmoil inside MV Agusta has trickled down to North America, with rumours the US distributor is up for sale, and questions over the brand’s future in Canada.

Asphalt & Rubber is reporting MV Agusta USA is about to be sold, supposedly to an Australian who also owns that country’s MV Agusta distributor. That deal should be done by the week’s end.

As for the Canadian distributor, it’s hard to say exactly what’s going on; we’ve been told buyers will be able to purchase MV Agusta’s 2017 models in Canada this year, but it’s unclear who will control the distribution, as Motovan is no longer running it. One rumour has the Canadian business coming under the US umbrella, but we were unable to talk to anybody who would confirm or deny that gossip. Regardless, we’ve been told 2017 models have been ordered, so if you want an MV Agusta this year, you should be able to get one.

In case you’re wondering how we got here, click here for the past few months’ worth of stories on MV Agusta. The manufacturer has been hit hard by financial problems made public last spring, and things are changing fast. Management announced a deal to bring in millions in capital, but that alone will likely not solve the problem, as the company also announced a plan to cut back on production and R&D to save costs — moves that make the future even more tricky. However, the company has developed many desirable models in recent years, and it’s hard to imagine a solution not coming out of this tangle, especially when you consider Mercedes now owns a quarter of the company. It’s unlikely they want that investment to go to waste.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more details; we expect to have more news in the near future.
