When Triumph’s liquid-cooled T120 lineup debuted last fall, the Scrambler model was strangely missing. Now we know why — it’s here, but with the T100 engine, not the T120.
The smaller T100 platform debuted at the Intermot show in October, and is arguably more in tune with the scrambler ethos — lower price, and lower weight, than the bigger 1200 cc machines. Once we saw that engine, it was pretty obvious this was the future of the Scrambler. A few weeks later, our suspicions have been confirmed.
Like its air-cooled predecessor, the new Street Scrambler differs slightly from the other bikes it shares an engine with (although this does share the same engine, unlike the air-cooled Scrambler, which had a different crank than the street-specific models).
This machine has a stiffer frame, beefed-up forks and longer rear shocks, and a 19-inch front wheel for dirt duty. A skid plate is standard, which is more than we can say for all Japanese dual sports (Shame!). The ABS system is able to be switched off, which is essential for hoonery and arguably safety off-road. Traction control can also be switched off.
Triumph also included a torque control clutch, and while the instrument panel is minimalistic, it does contain a host of information: Tachometer, gear indicator, trip meters, fuel range, traction control settings, and more.
The pillion seat is a separate unit and can be quickly unbolted, which is probably a concession to the customization crowd.
Visually, there’s little difference between this bike and the outgoing model, except for the radiator, with conservative paint schemes and the classic twin-pipe high-mount exhaust.
Given the farkle-happy nature of most scrambler owners, Triumph will have 150 accessories available for the machine, including Fox shocks, crash bars, and rack.
Canadian pricing and availability hasn’t been announced yet. Given its dedicated chassis, we’d expect a higher price tag than the T100’s $11,100 CAD MSRP.
