Report: Harley-Davidson to debut new 107-inch engine

We have no way of confirming whether this is true, but Revzilla is claiming to have details and photos of a new motor from Harley-Davidson, with a displacement of 107 cubic inches.

The new engine will supposedly be introduced to the touring lineup for the 2017 season, and then be installed across the Big Twin range in 2018, replacing the current 103 (which itself followed a similar path) and the Twin Cooled liquid-cooled motors.

Revzilla’s source claims the new motor has heads that receive both oil cooling and liquid cooling. They’ll have four-valve heads with a single cam.

Revzilla’s source also claims there is a 114 ci and 131 ci version of this motor coming down the pipeline. For now, we’ll just have to take his word, although his photos do look convincing. See his photos and many other details on the engine at Revzilla here.

  1. What’s interesting about this is that when the valves need to be checked/adjusted on a dresser, the tank has to come off just to get at the cylinder heads, and that means that pretty well ALL the bodywork is going to have to come off as well. That’s a whole lot of shop hours: I bet the dealerships are salivating over this since they will be able to bleed their customers white.

All this after HD went and replaced the gear-driven cam (that never wears out) with a chain-driven cam (that DOES wear out). Clearly Hardley-Ableson can’t afford to put in helical-cut gears for their cams, as that would cut into their profits since a cam chain is so much cheaper. Better to let the customer foot the cost of chain replacement.

I wonder what’s next in Hardley-Ableson’s “Great Leap Backwards”: Hot tube ignition? Total loss oil system? Maybe they’ll really take the next logical leap and go to STEAM power!

    • What do you ride now Phart? And why such a hate on? Actually with their hydraulic lifters checks and adjustments aren’t required, period. Otherwise everything wears in time – chains or gears, so…

As someone who’d owned nearly every brand I can tell you Harleys are as reliable as anything (much more in my experience – ask me about my BMW). My Road King has been ridden sea to sea and it’s stone reliable and the easiest thing ever to maintain, or work on.

      • Try reading the actual article, clown.

“Inside the heads, those valves are operated by forked rockers. And valve adjustment? Well, this is a bit of a departure for Harley. Rather than the hydraulic lifters of the Evo and Twin Cam, or the adjustable pushrods of the Shovel, the Milwaukee Eight is sporting locknut style adjusters up top.”

        • You didn’t answer my questions.

And my definition of a clown: A. a man who calls another man names on the internet B. someone who takes unsubstantiated internet rumors to make definitive claims about an otherwise really successful company who’s actually has a history of doing the opposite of what you’re insinuating (having low maintenance features).

How about you go back to your BS posts, and I’ll go back to ignoring ’em. If we do ever meet, I’m looking forward to your name calling.

    • Classic Bondo. Most likely to be leading a line going under the speed limit (in order). Toyota Corolla, Harley trikes, Harley bikes, Mustang Convertibles, Can Am trikes. That is what I see in BC and Quebec. Other than the first they sure spend a lot of money to look good going very slowly. Looking good and being cool is the priority for this group, that is fair, but I wish they would let others pass or at least go the speed limit like the RV’s do. Ah well, that ain’t gonna change so I just blow by them on my RT. And take my speeding ticket lumps as the fates decide.

      • Haven’t met a Victory or Indian yet who could keep up with my Harley 120RX with 145.4 HP at the wheel! Or any make V-Twin for that matter. Might be some V-Rods out there though. Harleys roll off the showroom floor with just average horsepower for their size for a very long engine life & reliability. But the engine is designed to be able to handle massive performance upgrades that can be achieved with bolt in kits or like me, direct replacement engines. That’s why HD is King of the street & track in the V-Twin class! Will they beat the modified big inline DOHC 4 cylinder Jap Crap. No. Different designs, and 2 cyl pushrod will never be able to create more HP or rev faster than the DOHC 4cyl. But Harley’s are also about keeping their 113 year tradition going. It’s alive and well, which you Jap Crap riders will never understand or be a part of!

        • Wow.
          Just.
          Wow.

King of the “V-twin class”? “Street or track”?

          Jap Crap?

Do you actually leave the house or read anything other than HD sales brochures?

Wait…are you Donald Trumps’ speech writer?

          • I need to get me one of them dreamer dynos so my Multistrada can make 250hp at the rear wheel! Then I can diss all others and call them crap even if I haven’t ridden them! Bloody brilliant!

        • Interesting rant Rich Willis. So you bought and installed the 120RX crate motor kit and got 145HP out of your Big Twin – congratulations ! What’s that got to do with the price of potatoes ?
Its not technically street or emissions legal and bears little or no resemblance to any ‘out of the box’ HD or Polaris. A modified V-Rod will still eat you for breakfast, just look at the NHRA ProStock motorcycles.
What you’ve created is Lincoln’s axe – other than the handle and the blade its totally stock !
The 107 is long overdue, and likely never would have happened without competition from other makers future and emissions requirements. I applaud HD for making the step.
As for comparisons to ‘Jap Crap’, so what ? A lot of us understand completely the HD mystique and appeal BUT there are a lot of other very nice machines out there too.
Turn your baseball cap back around so the sun’s not in your eyes and take a look at the bigger picture…

        • AGREED! I have a 120ST 130lbs of torque, No other stock bagger can compete and, they don’t have parts for most to help them compete. I hear that they are going to have a 131ci motor…i will have that next if that’s true.
