BMW invests in tracking/navigation technology

BMW’s iVentures segment has reportedly bought into Rever Moto, a tech company that provides tracking and navigation software, among other things.

Rever is best-known for its Android/iOS app that offers tracking, GPS ride recording, as well as a social media platform for motorcyclists to meet up and talk about rides. A premium version allows you to record GPX files, access Butler Maps products, use offline maps, and track friends’ progress.

So what does BMW want with this tech? It wouldn’t be the first manufacturer looking to offer ride-planning apps to customers — Harley-Davidson has an app like this already, which is also offered on its website. For manufacturers wanting to build brand loyalty and keep their bikes’ riders cloistered together, corporate ownership of this technology makes perfect sense, especially if they’re able to offer the social aspect as added value on purchases.
