Help fund a better motorcycle horn

Do loud horns save lives? It’s hard to say, since so many motorcyclists don’t bother to upgrade their stock units, but if you think you want a louder horn, Kickstarter has a project you should get on board with.

The project is called the Shockwave, and it’s designed by Peter Olt, the New Zealand inventor who also brought us the Screaming Banshee horn. The new horn is designed to address customer comments about the first horn — they wanted something louder, lighter, and more compact than the original. They also wanted easier installation, and the ability to use the stock horn button.

Olt has obliged, with the Shockwave design, but the Screaming Banshee company needs help. Despite its advantages over the old model, they need some help getting it to market. They’re trying to raise $10,000 on Kickstarter (see their page here). Support the project, and they’ll give you the new horn at a lower price than the old model, as well as a deal on shipping and a free mounting bracket.

According to Shockwave’s Kickstarter page, the new design is 40 per cent lighter than the original, and makes 123 dB. A quick tap delivers a quiet warning honk, but pressing it louder delivers an aural assault, as well as flashing your headlight high beam, if you wish to wire that connection in.

  1. Whaaaat? I’ve always been told that loud pipes saves lives… What a let down (specially for this shmuck that I know that has been riding his Hardly with straight pipes for 5 years and has smacked down by cagers twice in that time. D’oh…)
