BMW builds a cool Dakar homage

Before fancy things like liquid-cooling came along, BMW’s flat twins used to dominate at the Paris-Dakar Rally, and their latest concept bike unveiled at Wheels and Waves harks back to those times.

BMW has a history of displaying cool concepts at Wheels and Waves — last year it was the Path 22, that basically turned into the Scrambler, which should be available soon at a dealership near you.

This year, the air-cooled R NineT once again serves as basis for an interesting concept. The Lac Rose concept is BMW’s homage to the days when they dominated the Sahara, with a paint scheme that brings to mind another Euro manufacturer’s offerings. The bike’s lines also channel the DNA of many modern scramblers, with a headlight slammed down close to the front wheel.

Overall, the bike looks like it’s a lot more offroad-ready than other scramblers available on showroom floors. But BMW hasn’t guaranteed they’ll produce it. It’s possible we may see a production bike derived from this machine, as sort of an “Adventure” version of the standard R NineT Scrambler, similar to BMW’s treatment of their GS lineup (pay a little extra coin and you get an offroad seat, spoked rims, etc.).
