OPP officer cleared in Alliston motorcycle fatality

An OPP officer has been cleared by the Special Investigation Unit after an investigation into a fatal crash in the town of Allison last year.

In the incident, police were contacted by a bar after a 35-year-old man had ridden off in an impaired condition, headed towards another bar. Police caught up to the rider there, turning on their lights when the rider left the bar. He sped off on his motorcycle; police chased him, and the rider crashed into cement road barriers and died of his injuries in hospital.

Because of the fatality, the SIU investigated. According to their report, “The evidence indicates that the subject officer drove at a moderate speed throughout, with her lights and siren activated, and cognizant of the traffic control signals along the route.  Moreover, there is no indication that the officer’s conduct in what was a very short pursuit in time and distance – less than a minute over approximately 700 metres – ever endangered the public, including the driver of the motorcycle.  In fact, the evidence indicates that the officer was at all times a significant distance behind the motorcycle – about 400 metres at the point of collision.

  1. Sounds like a reasonable decision. If you choose to run from the cops and wreck yourself in the process, that’s all on you, I think.
