The Huffington Post is reporting Michigan’s motorcyclists are seeing a rise in head injuries and deaths since the state repealed its helmet laws.
The report, based on numbers from the American Journal of Surgery, doesn’t give a precise number on the increase in head injuries since the helmet law was repealed, but does say they have increased in both number and severity.
However, the numbers of on-scene and post-accident deaths are shocking: The report says Michigan has seen deaths at the scene of the accident rise over 400 per cent, and post-crash deaths in hospital rose over 300 per cent. Doctors say the result of the law change was visible in emergency rooms almost immediately after the switch.

Darwinism at work.
Wow….who’d have though? Lol
Sarcasm aside…..it’s a testament to human stupidity when helmets need to be mandated. We shouldn’t need the laws……and besides, it would help Darwin continue the good fight…lol
I’ve ridden motorcycles all over the world and helmet law or not, I always wear a helmet. I even take my own so I know what I’m wearing is gonna give me the best chance of surviving in a crash. I want to be able to ride for a Loooooooooong time! But, I respect others rights to choose. As for being a burden on health care, someone with a life changing brain injury as a result of a motorcycle accident may well need lifelong ongoing medical care. I’m not sure how much of a burden that would be?
Was biking through the States – stopped to chat with a State Trooper at Maryland border. I asked if they had a helmet law and the officer said to me, “If you have any brains and want to keep them – wear a helmet”. Never did find out if there was a helmet law, and wore my helmet from then on.
Dont understand. How can they be burden to health care. 9 outta 10 die on the spot. If those 9 would reach their 70s and 80s with all the medical issues old age brings wouldn’t this be less of a burden?
This shouldn’t be surprising.
honestly i don’t believe in helmet laws to begin with. I mean if anyone is stupid enough not to wear one they deserve what they get.
Not sure it’s a good idea when we all share the price of insurance and health costs.
good point, no helmet should be legal, but voids any coverage
