A Harley-Davidson bike from the company’s early days has sold for a record amount at an Australian auction.
Although Harley-Davidson isn’t a performance motorcycle company these days (although they’re heavily involved with drag racing), once upon a time they built bikes as light and fast as the competition. That’s when they built this 1927 FHA 8-Valve V-Twin racer, complete with sidecar, and shipped it to a race team in Australia. It was raced into the 1930s, then put into storage.
Decades later, the bike surfaced in a barn, miraculously intact. This was a highly limited production machine when built, and to find a surviving example is pretty amazing, considering so many were bashed to bits on-track. That meant this bike would fetch a pretty penny at auction anywhere, and in Australia, it managed to set a new record for a motorcycle auction, fetching $600,000 AUD (roughly $560,000 CAD). A local man actually bought the bike, and says he plans to keep the bike in Australia.
