New Miller Motorsports Park owners plan interesting upgrades

Miller Motorsports Park has been sold to a China-owned company, and the new owners have some interesting plans for the track, including additions and improvements to bring it up to FIM standards.

Although it’s situated in Utah, Miller has attracted many Canadian racers over the years, as it’s closer to many in western Canada than tracks in Ontario. Earlier this year, track management announced they were ending their operation of the facility, giving the local county control over the track. In turn, Tooele County officials announced earlier this week they were selling the track to the Mitime Investment & Development Group.

Mitime Investment & Development Group is a subsidiary of Chinese automotive giant Geely, who also owns Volvo. Part of their plan for the Miller facility is to offer training in road-racing, off-road racing and oval track racing. They’ll have to build an oval track to do this, and they’re also planning on building a drag strip facility nearby, so it’s safe to say Miller is going to look a lot different in coming years.

The Mitime group also says they’re planning to bring the track up to standards for FIM-sanctioned racing. That’s a pretty broad umbrella, which could mean nothing more than AMA-level superbike racing. However, World Superbike did visit Miller in the past, and it would be interesting if another North American stop was added to the WSB circuit. WSB hasn’t raced at Miller since 2012.

Mitime also apparently plans on developing vehicles for the Chinese motorsports industry at Miller, using data they gather on-site.

The changes at Miller will be spearheaded by Alan Wilson, who originally designed the track. He says he’s excited about using the track to export American-style racing to China; as part of his deal with Mitime, he’s going to design five tracks in China, to open in the next decade.
