Rumour has Guy Martin headed to Top Gear

At first, the rumours were jokes, but now the British papers say it’s true: roadracing star Guy Martin is being considered as a Top Gear presenter.

Of course, none of the previous trifecta of Top Gear presenters are returning, after one of them had a fracas with a producer. That means big changes ahead for Top Gear, the English-speaking world’s most-watched factual show (or so they claim).

If the rumours are true, and Martin comes aboard, it will be interesting to see what those changes are. While motorcycles did feature in Top Gear in the past, is it possible Martin will feature them more often? Martin’s previous TV show, Speed with Guy Martin, focused on all sorts of mad speed attempts on a wide variety of vehicles, including bikes. Hopefully, we’ll see more of them on the show, although it’s highly unlikely  will ever get the coverage that cars get.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that anything reported in the British papers is worth taking with a grain of salt. We do know Guy Martin has hinted he’s ending his racing career, or at least making some sort of change in direction after this year. He certainly has the high-speed skills to make it as a Top Gear presenter, as well as the technical know-how to replace, or even surpass, the previous hosts. He might need to be subtitled, though.

The other hosts being suggested are former model Jodie Kidd and actor Philip Glenister. Alas, neither of them seem to have any significant interest in motorcycles.
