Valerie Thompson sets new record on the salt

Female land speed racers are big news these days, it seems, with Valerie Thompson following Eva Håkansson by setting her own new record at Bonneville.

Håkansson’s record was set with an electric sidecar rig she built with her husband; Thompson, an accomplished pro drag racer and seven-time land speed record holder, set the mark on a more conventional bike. She used a hot-rodded BMW S1000RR in the MPS-G 1000 class to set the record in the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association’s 28th Annual World of Speed event.

Thompson set her 336.047 kph record after making six out of eight passes over the 320 kph (200 mph) threshold. Her best pass saw her hit 337.72 kph.
