EICMA: Ducati shows off Monster 1200

New Monster is a big one!

What’s got liquid cooling, weighs 209 kg wet, and doesn’t wear a stitch of clothing? If you guessed Ducati’s new Monster 1200 naked bike, give yourself a prize …

Ducati unveiled the Monster 1200 at EICMA today. Of course, the biggest news was the machine’s superbike-sourced 1198 cc Testastretta motor and with 135 hp (at 8,750 rpm) and 87 ft-lb of torque (at 7,250 rpm) it is one powerful beast.

Question is, just how fast can you go sans fairing?

The Monster 1200 will have a 2-1-2 exhaust, and the classic Ducati steel trellis frame. There’s traction control, and naturally, EFI with three riding modes that can harness the bike’s power under less-than-ideal riding conditions. The front forks are fully adjustable 43 mm units from Kayaba, and the rear Sachs monoshock has adjustable spring preload and rebound damping.

Braking comes from twin 230 mm discs up front, mated to Brembo Monobloc four-piston calipers. In back there’s a single 230 mm disc, with two-piston caliper. Fuel capacity is 17.4 litres. Seat height will adjust from 785 mm to 808 mm.

That's a pretty minimal frame.

Now, if that’s not enough muscle for you, Ducati’s also introducing a Monster 1200 S, with more power and even higher-spec components. The 1200 S makes 145hp @ 8,750 rpm, and 92 ft-lb of torque at 7,250 rpm – good luck holding on! To help you tame that power, they upgraded the front brakes to 330 mm discs. The rear suspension is a fully-adjustable Ohlins shock, and there’s 48 mm Ohlins shocks as well (also fully adjustable). There will be different paint options available for the 1200 S as well.

We don’t have an arrival date for the new Monsters, but they’ll cost $14,595 for the standard 1200, and $17,295 for the 1200 S when they arrive in Canada.
