Stacey Nesbitt is on fire

A new AMA series could give Canadian riders like Stacey Nesbitt (seen here racing in Qatar) a chance to further develop skills before moving up to bigger machines. Photo: Statoni Racing/Facebook

Racing fans will remember Stacey Nesbitt, the young teenager from Montreal (originally from Ireland) who’s won national titles in the CBR125 and CBR250 classes. This year she’s trying out GP bikes in the RACE series and also the VRRA (Vintage Road Racing Association) series, with predicably spectacular results.

She was impressive on a 250 at the first RACE event, but was spectacular on a 125 at the VRRA’s first event June 2 on Shannonville’s Pro track. In one of the reasonably big classes, mostly composed of big four-strokes, she started dead last and finished 10th.

For a follow-up, she ran in the new Vintage GP class for “real” GP bikes only, for which there was a great entry, ten 250s and five 125s. When’s the last time you saw 15 GP bikes on a grid in Canada? The smell of two-stroke mix was fantastic!

Stacey was gridded dead last at the start on the sixth row, got a lousy start (very easy on a 125, as anyone who’s tried knows) and finished fourth overall. Three more laps and she’d have been on the podium. One lap she caught up to a group of four 250s, blew by three of them in T-1 on the outside, couldn’t quite get inside the fourth one at T-2 so just moved over and rode around the outside of him, too. Four bikes in as many seconds, all of them 250s.

To say it was impressive would be a severe understatement. Here’s hoping she gets some serious support in the future, because the kid has definitely got it.
